Biologists' spat over effects of Chenobyl on wildlife, How can a lay person judge what is true?

This illustrates how hard it is to get good information: coupled with the fact that the Ukrainian government needs money to rebuild the "sarcophogus", and international donations have fallen short, there is a temptation to suspect that the need to generate income has overridden the "precautionary principle" in an uncertain situation. I hope that is not true
