Avatars not working for me

Sorry, but I have been trying to upload a picture to use as my avatar, but no matter what I do it always says the file is too big. Is the limit actually much lower than the 150X200 pixels that is listed? I've been fiddling around with them in photoshop and still nada...

Maximum width is 100 pixels for this forum. That's a custom setting; I have no idea why it doesn't communicate that to users...
