We need to come up with a name for the movement that encompasses the main points that we stand for. Any suggestions are appreciated

  • Religion - Secular society that discourages religion and it's influence in society

  • Politics - A democracy, eliminating political funding from corporations, vested interests and corruption.

  • Economy - An alternative to corporate capitalism and a reducation in the 'fat cat' class, more 'economic democracy', more transparency in business, more worker gain from company profit, less hoarding of wealth and a reduction in the obscenely rich

  • Drugs - An end to the 'war on drugs'. Treatment of drug use as a social health issue, not a criminal issue

  • Society - Education and Healthcare government provided and free for all. Education championed and heavily invested in. A change in culture and societal focus away from 'make $$$$ at any cost' to working for the greater good and enjoying life. Gross national happiness over gross national product. Standard of living before profit margins. Evidence based policies, not policies based on fear, religion or tradition.

We need to champion that there ARE alternatives to the current system.

We need a name or motto for the movement as I am currently designing a website with dedicated forum to promote this.

Acronym for There is no alternative: it was a slogan adopted by Margaret Thatcher's tories when they started this mess in the UK and it has been part of what they have tried to convince us of ever since

She and Reagan opened the door for this: things take a long time to play out, and that is part of the problem. We don't keep the history in mind enough

As I mentioned in the other thread, I am a proponent of a name including the internet. I do appreciate that there are people who don't use the internet often, or who think the internet is not srs bsns. But the latter are wrong, and the former unfortunate. I think it's quite useful to recognize that we are an internet phenomenon.

Through the internet, we can connect with people all over the world, share ideas, update knowledge real fast, and transcend the isolation of the individuals, which causes them to be unaware of alternatives. The isolation is more problematic in America, so I would hesitate to call it anything regional based. Although at the same time, it is true that their problems and outlook is different from the one in Europe, and Asia and Africa. But a lot of the hegemony is international now: the corporations are international; some policy making institutes are international. The IMF, for example, is doing to Greece what it has already done in South America and Africa: ruining the country through imposition of a free market brutality economy and privatization of public assets. Their neoliberal agenda is gutting countries all over the world.

But, in Greece, I saw some interesting banners by the protesters in front of their government building: "No Pasaran" [Spanish: This/you shall not pass): A reference to the Spanish Civil War, in which the socialist workers fought the privileged fascist elites. But also "Deutsche Arbeiter Entweckt!" [German: German workers wake up!]: A direct appeal to the German taxpayers who are made to guarantee gigantic loans used to enrich international banks operating in Greece, without their knowledge.

There's always been an international aspect to such protest/struggles. The International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War is still famous. Famous members of that battalion were George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway. But I think what is specific about this movement is that we have the internet as a tool. It is no coincidence that this was boosted at 4chan. And that the Anonymous/Wikileaks cells are now so popular. I think we should ride on that wave. For we are the internet. And we are legion!

That being said, some more ideas:

  • Brave New Internet

  • We Are Legion

I do like a lot of these names, but should they perhaps be a little easier to understand at first glance?

I agree, these names are great, but perhaps they could be a little clearer. Not everyone who see's the name is going to investigate what the policies it promotes are, so we need to give more in the name.

I'm also wary that we'll never agree on a name and that we'll get bogged down in choosing one. I don't want this to happen.

At the moment my favourites are:

United citizens of the World
The Coalition for a Fairer World
Brave New Internet

What about fair, in stead of fairer? Coalition for a Fair World or Fair World Coalition, perhaps?

Inspiration and Intelligence Institute for the International Indignants.

Is there such a thing as too much alliteration?

(As I always say: 5 I's see more than one. Or: In the land of the blind, 5 I's is king. An I4I...)

If you're setting up a website, it's your choice which name to put in the banner, of course. I'm just shooting some suggestions from the hip.
