I was talking about the levellers and the diggers recently: and I remembered this

www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWzzvnPOyTM&feature=related

and while I am with dick gaughan

www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtHCGj8UNMQ&feature=related

The Romans were the masters
When Jesus walked the land
In Judea and in Galilee
They ruled with an iron hand
The poor were sick with hunger
And the rich were clothed in splendour
And the rebels, whipped and crucified
Hung rotting as a warning
And Jesus knew the answer -
"Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's"
Said, "Love your enemies"
But Judas was a Zealot and he
Wanted to be free
"Resist", he said, "the Romans' tyranny"
So stand up, stand up for Judas
And the cause that Judas served
It was Jesus who betrayed the poor with his word
Now Jesus was a conjuror,
Miracles were his game
He fed the hungry thousands
And they glorified his name
He cured the lame and leper
He calmed the wind and the weather
And the wretched flocked to touch him
So their troubles would be taken
And Jesus knew the answer -
"All you who labour, all you who suffer
Only believe in me"
But Judas sought a world where no-one
Starved or begged for bread
"The poor are always with us", Jesus said
Now Jesus sowed division
Where none had been before
Not the slave against the master
But the poor against the poor
Caused son to rise up against father
And brother to fight against brother
For "He that is not with me
Is against me" was his teaching
Said Jesus, "I am the answer
You unbelievers shall burn forever
Shall die in your sins"
"Not sheep or goats" said Judas but
"Together we may dare
Shake off the chains of tyranny we share"
Jesus stood upon the mountain
With a distance in his eyes
"I am the Way, the Life" he cried
"The Light that never dies
So renounce all earthly treasures
And pray to your heavenly father"
And he pacified the hopeless
With the hope of life eternal
Said Jesus, "I am the answer
And you who hunger only remember
Your reward's in heaven"
So Jesus preached the other world
But Judas wanted this
And he betrayed his master with a kiss
By sword and gun and crucifix
Christ's gospel has been spread
And two thousand cruel years have shown
The way that Jesus led
The heretics burned and tortured
And the butchering bloody Crusaders
The bombs and rockets sanctified
That rain down death from heaven
They followed Jesus, they knew the answer
All unbelievers must be believers
Or else be broken
"So place no trust in saviours"
Judas said, "for everyone
Must be to his or her own self a sun"

It is a tad heretical, though :)

I am very fond of this :). Some might say I like screeching women, but if I do, I do :D

Kate Rusby: our town. A mushy nostalgia song, but what a voice she has

And a little more upbeat cos that was a bit sad: Nuala Kennedy

I was there for that last one: it was great !

Seems to be my night for nostalgia: I did not know these three were still playing together because I have not seen them as a trio for several years. I love all three of them.

Alain Genty's bass is a beautiful sound: almost like woodwind.

Bert Jansch has died.

This is his most famous track. I post it in tribute.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqjUWJtH88c

And to remember highlights of his work, here is Jansch and Renbourn: and inimitable duo

www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZOL6pHp2zs&feature=related

And here with Pentangle.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFuxq_J1VuA

He had not much of a voice: but it didn't seem to matter, somehow

Finally "Nottamun Town" Jansch at his peculiar best and a great song. The tune was borrowed by Bob Dylan for Masters of War: and I think that some of the lyrics resonate with some in his other work, such as Hard Rain. Not a direct thing (c/f Paul Simon's lifting of Scarborough Fair :) ) but folk works like this: influence and carry over.

Guy called Rory Mcleod. Two songs, very different in style.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oppy5FzoZCM&feature=related

This one is called Passing the Pain Down.

"we want our independence we don't want your American Dream/ your dream is a nightmare with too many screams"

Amen.

The second one is very different: a personal song called The Wind is Getting Stronger, about his grandmother and other things

This is a gaggle of the very best folk musicians around: Julie Fowlis singing but a fair few of the usual suspects: what more could you want?

Oooh: never heard of Idir, though I know Karen Matheson, of course. The video sucks: don't watch, just listen. This is gorgeous

While I am on the subject of Karen Matheson and folk and stuff: I think it is interesting how each artist makes every song their own. It is part of what I love about folk. So I thought I would put two versions of the same song here to show how wonderful that is. The song is Fear a Bhata.

This is the gaelic version Karen Matheson sings with Capercaillie

Sandy Denny was a very famous english folk singer who died tragically young. She does the same song in english and the contrast is delightful IMO

Clive Carroll and someone called Gismonti, who seems to be brazilian. The tune they are playing is called An Phis Fliuch: bit of fusion in the treatment: fabulous!

This is the same tune done by The Unwanted, who are a band from Sligo. This is not straight either: it is fused with a sort of bluesy guitar from Seamie O'Dowd.

Again I love how everyone makes folk tunes their own!

Seeing ex planxty tonight made me remember this performance by Christy Moore: I am going to a concert of leftie songs tomorrow so this is good preparation...

While I am on the subject of Kathryn Tickell (ok, it was on another thread; so shoot me!) I came across this.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxBZ5NPCzYI&feature=related

I am putting it here because it shows a side of Richard Thompson we don't often hear. Pay attention to the guitar, especially on the second tune.

ETA: it occurred to me that some of you may not know his playing. This is his most famous song

www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0kJdrfzjAg&feature=related

He is also one of the best songwriters I know. So I am including Beeswing just to show that.

I was having a wee youtube fest to myself this morning and naturally I was listening to folk. So I was hearing different versions of John Barleycorn when I came across this version by a band called Traffic: hardly folk, you might think. Don't know why they did this song and it is pretentious as rock stuff tends to be: but the flute is great and the voice is wonderful. I like it

I couldn't find any of Karine Polwart from the leftie concert she hosted at celtic connections earlier this year: but one is up now and since I don't have any of her stuff on this thread I feel I really have to post it here.

I don't think I mentioned Alistair Hulett. He was another great leftie folkie and he lived in Australia for many years so I didn't see him except once. He came home to Scotland at the end of the 90's and he died here in Glasgow in 2010. He was a member of the socialist workers' party but I don't hold that against him :) It is fitting to post this video of him singing the internationale in this thread

www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtAfIjRKUak&feature=relmfu

Though I like this better

www.youtube.com/watch?v=o53tMRggxuA&feature=relmfu

and this is more relevant to my city right now: for we have a terrible problem with sectarianism here
