Every year we have a big folk festival here and it is a highlight of my life, really. So I generally bore people on the Internet about it in January.

Tonight I saw Damien O'Kane. He was playing with John Joe Kelly, who I have talked about before, and with a guitarist I have seen before, but whose name I don't know. They are all great musicians and it was a real delight. Damien O'Kane plays banjo and also tenor guitar. He is as good as Eamon Coyne, and praise doesn't get any higher than that for a banjo player, IMO.

There is a not very good Youtube video here, but the guitarist is different. Gives a flavour, anyway.

And a track from his new album, Mystery Inch, here

www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOB0ascAldg&feature=related

I also saw a short, fun set by Lochaber Gold, at the festival club. Lochaber Gold is a celebration of people who learned their music at Lochaber High School. A great many have gone on to form/join some of the best folk bands in this country: Shooglenifty; Salsa Celtica; Breabach and Deaf Shepherd, to name a few. Shows what a really good teacher can achieve. Can't show a vid of this, because they do not usually perform together: but it was a strong traditional set which set everybody dancing, even though there was no space: good humoured collisions and enthusiasm.

I love this festival :D

Today was Vent du Nord's 10th birthday concert: there is a wee medley here which gives a flavour of this fabulous quebecois band

www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC163DaHrHc&feature=related

Last year they toured with Breabach, so Breabach played with them tonight. This is not a great video but it does give a flavour and you can imagine them playing together: lot of energy :)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPE70yyCoPU&feature=related

Dervish were there as well: you can get an idea of them here:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fpz9KPgV-qk

This year they are to tour the nordic countries with Vasen: so they joined them, too. Vasen are a great band, and this mix is really well worth seeing if you happen to be in one of those countries in March. They are doing one night in Upsalla in Sweden: two in Finland and one each in Denmark and Norway before coming back here for the Orkney festival

A wee bit of Vasen here:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWorsJwzycw

These are really good musicians but it has to be said that the sheer joy Vent du Nord bring to their performances is a heart lifting thing!!

And that is not all for today. I saw this amazing band from Italy, at the festival club I didn't even know they had bagpipes in Italy and they had a really impressive flute player, not to mention the fiddler. I didn't catch their name so if anyone knows about an Italian folk band who were in Glasgow today, do tell.

Then later Cherish the Ladies did a set and so did Shooglenifty :D. I can't afford to see as much as I usually do this year, but that was lucky for me cos Cherish the Ladies are always good and Shooglenifty are currently my favourite musicians: well today they are :)

Went to see Seamus O'Dowd and Martin Connor last night in a show done in partnership with Sligo Live. They were as one might expect: ie, fabulous

Here they are with Cathal Hayden

www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNdxrffoLws. Cathal Hayden wasn't there, but they got by ....:)

And here playing the Entry of the Queen of Sheba by one George Patrick Murphy Handel: or so Martin Connor assured us yesterday ;)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxCTaoZ3Mjk&feature=endscreen&NR=1

A young band called The Gorgeous Colours also played: they are from Sligo as well: not traditional music: quite different. I liked them.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuE7zeewHPI&feature=related

And I saw the Albanach duo the day before: good job I don't play the guitar cos I would go into a decline if I did

Going to this next week: I have very high expectations

So tonight I went to see Session A9, one of my favourite bands.

The first half was devoted to two other bands I did not know. The first one was an accomplished trio of sisters who played fiddle and also sang. The style was what they called Western Swing: there is no doubt they had the skills but this type of music seems dead to me, and while I appreciate their technical expertise I did not enjoy this: it seemed to me that they made skill the enemy of music. Just me perhaps. They played this tonight so you can judge for yourself

www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H24HFte3iE&feature=related

Next up were The Sultans of String: they are Canadian and their stuff was really interesting. Again different, but this is a great band and I will be looking out for their stuff in future. They played lovely piece inspired by a trip to Lebanon one of them took and it was almost like klezmer: but I think that is not typical though this short set does not qualify me to say that. Anyway there is a sample here:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8fcU6jc_4k&feature=related

Then Session A9 got the second half: and they were as good as they always are. I have posted links before but that won't stop me! This is a sampler only: so the changes are not clean: only because they are from different parts of the set

www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QNYK5xGRyM

And the sleeping tune cos I love it. Posted it before; posting it again :P

Eat your hearts out, if you are musicians!

Tonight I went to see Fred Morrison. He is a piper but he fuses with blue grass. He was playing with his usual people: Martin O'Neill and Mattheu Watson but also had Ron Block on banjo and the legendary Tim O'Brien.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdCaeVWB9t8

Looks like Steve Byrne joined them in that one.

The second half was Donal Lunny, Andy Irvine, Liam O'Flynn and Paddy Glackin. These are veteran musicians and they are all so good and so relaxed about it: it is always a real pleasure to see them. Shame Christy Moore wasn't there but you can't have everything: Bruce Molsky did join them for one song so can't complain :)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIQBD4aNysw

And this is song about how they all met in Donoghue's bar in Dublin. Blessings on that pub!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIQBD4aNysw

www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgRHnz3UR-A&feature=related

And with Christy Moore but without Paddy Glackin: one of the most beautiful songs I know. This is old but lovely...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQr3-qyrMUY&feature=related

And this is older yet: original planxty. A rebel song, I suppose: but a lament not a warcry

As advertised, I went to see a show called "the world turned upside down" It was not what I expected. Karine Polwart hosted it, and her set was as usual: brilliant, she is. The format was four songs each and I knew all but one of what she sang: but I could listen to her all day, and it is good to see her live.

This is one of them: called "Sorry" from her album This Earthly Spell.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=AviADrhX-v8

And Firethief, which she did not sing tonight: but I can't find another she did sing. And this is lovely

www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMAuoYQC9TA&feature=related

Next up was Kamilya Jubran. This was really challenging: she is palestinian and sings in arabic. I could not understand the structure of the music. The voice was great and one of the four songs was more accessible than the others. It would take me some adjustment to get the most from this, however. There is no doubt it is interesting and we got a translation of the words at the door, which was helpful: all four songs were settings of poems from arabic writers: a syrian and one who lives in Beirut, I remember.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WmNMzz6_R0

She was followed by John Trudell. He is a in a native american tradition but it could not be said that he sings: this was more performance poetry with a musical background. The first piece was great: with a backing of native american chanting as well as the musicians. The rest were largely "green" which fits with native american concerns, as I understand it: but it was a bit misty twisty for my taste. He is "spiritual", I think. This is the one I liked; but the theme appeals to me...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZAq2EKdP0Y&feature=related

Chris Wood is a much more traditional folkie and his songs are often very comment on what is going on: he is engaged and I like his perspective on many of the issues we have. He finished with a really interesting rendition of Jerusalem which challenged the more usual jingoistic flavour: he pointed out the questions and it was a different meaning altogether. He also sang this, about the murder of Jean Charles de Menenez in London. It is probably more typical of his work

www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVecC8oNJl8

And this one: which is about why money cannot buy you a cottage in the Cotswolds: sadly it can: but not always - there are still other values

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vtxmfI61dY&feature=related

Justin Currie is new to me, but his set was full of energy and anger and it was a very different tone from the others. He sang this

www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4b_dBMfBf0

And this

www.youtube.com/watch?v=peJr2sEhCNY&feature=related

I will look for more of his stuff.

The evening ended with Pura Fe: also singing for and about native americans: what a voice she has. Very powerful. Can't find any of what she sang tonight: but here she is

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TKHimF4g4o&feature=related

And here with the band she had with her tonight

www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XVJdn_wCjI&feature=related

As you can see this was quite a mix of styles. :)

Last night I went to see a show called "Northumbrian Voices" which was done by Kathryn Tickell and her colleagues. This was an unusual show because it was a mix of oral history and music. It was fascinating. She had taped interviews with very elderly people who talked of life when they were young; shepherds and farm workers and fiddlers (the same people really), and people like that. The band read those pieces and interspersed and backed them with various tunes from the area. I was enthralled. The sense of place was so strong and the lives so vivid.

Can't find any excerpts from that show on youtube: but there is some music to share :)

Last night :(.

I got a standing ticket for the transatlantic sessions and it was brilliant! I had linked to the tv thing above so I won't reiterate the house band: it is pretty much unchanged, and that is the way I like it :D

But someone called Raul Malo was one of the guests and I did not know him before. He has a wonderful voice and I get the impression he is fairly eclectic in his material because he sang a standard ballad (Around the world) and a Hank Williams song (Hey good looking) These are not what I would choose but he also sang some songs I do not know: soppy songs which I really liked, actually.

This is one of them

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1ycA4IOR1U

As I said, I have a DVD of previous transatlantic sessions. So while I am on the subject I will post this as a tribute to John Martyn. He was a great singer and writer, but like so many scots he died young because "the whisky stole the light". John Martyn could be an unreliable bastard, but on form he could break your heart.

This is from the second series of the transatlantic sessions, with Eddi Reader.

And without from the same place

www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NveqHBR5_w&feature=related

RIP.

Well I can't go this year, which is a sorrow to me. But never mind: as is obvious from previous years much more of this is available on the net and so I will post some vids of artists I would have gone to see had I been able.

Tonight Carlos Nunez is playing with the Scottish National orchestra and that is what I would have chosen. I do not know how he is with that orchestra but I do know he is marvellous and so here is a vid of him with the chieftans. I do not know where that is, but I love the combination of Irish and Galician pipes which starts about 1:21

Tomorrow would have been a dilemma because Tim Edey is playing with other musicians I like at the same time as Alisdair Fraser is playing elsewhere. Hard to make such a choice, but I figure that I would maybe have seen Alisdair Fraser cos I was lucky enough to see Tim Edey with Seamus Begley when I was on holiday in Donegal: at this venue as it happens, though not at the school they have in winter

I like the transition to Sidh beg, sidh mor in this, and then the way he is just playing with that tune

I saw this singer today. It is a tradition I am wholly unfamiliar with but it was an interesting set so I thought I would share the one video I could find.

For some reason no post appeared with the above link: and no link to Adam Sutherland's band either

So here it is again

Harald Haugaard band played here tonight. I have mentioned him before, but it is a long time since I have seen him live. He is now with this band, and it includes Helene Blum. Wonderful singer, and I particularly the cellist.

They all seem to really enjoy their playing: so do I :)
