I just wanted to express my admiration for the people of Ireland, who have voted to establish same sex marriage in that country by a substantial margin.

It is a measure of how much things have changed in that country, perhaps. Or it may be that the mainstream narrative of what the Irish people actually think has long been out of touch with the reality, as happens in many countries so far as I can tell: certainly it is true in Scotland.

It is inspiring to have a demonstration of the fundamental decency of ordinary people, and it is particularly gratifying to see that a sense of fairness trumps the power of religion, in a country which has long been seen to be profoundly catholic with all that entails. Homosexuality was only decriminalised in that country 22 years ago: how fast things change.
